And I love what I do...
Steve Johnson was born in Liverpool, England. At school, Steve was a keen middle distance runner winning three English Schools Championships at 1500m and set a Great Britain record for his age group in the 4x1,500 metre relay. In 1989, he took part in a student exchange programme which allowed him to study in Michigan in the United States. During his time here, he became a state champion and participated in many running events including the Athletic Congress national cross country meet at Purdue University and the Invitational Cross Country meet at Bullock Creek.
Steve is a self taught filmmaker and his love for film first began after seeing Star Wars at the Futurist Theatre in Liverpool. In November 2005, Johnson established Futurist Online Ltd (later becoming Futurist Digital Ltd in 2013) in Glasgow, Scotland. Over the years, Johnson developed his skills on the Red Digital Cinema Camera and later became a freelance trainer and Course Producer for their REDucation courses and regulary teaches in many cities across the globe including Berlin, Brisbane, London, Los Angeles, Moscow and Singapore. He also regulary teaches at the YouTube Space, London for RED.
Steve's first film as a director was the award winning "The Students of Springfield Street", which follows twenty-four hours in the lives of six friends, examining the intricate weave of words, actions and emotions that unknowingly link and change the direction of their lives and how difficult it can be when debt, sickness, lies, drugs, pregnancy, unrequited love and assault weave their way into their ordinary lives.
Steve penned the screenplay a number of years ago. Under his Futuristfilm Ltd production company banner, he shot on two RED EPIC cameras at 5K in and around Glasgow, Scotland, over 23 days, using a largely unknown cast, ‘borrowed’ locations and generously donated lights, props and production equipment. Steve crowdfunded the $6,000 to fund the production in just four weeks. The film went on to debut at the 2015 Hoosierdance Film Festival and won the Best Feature Film award at the 2015 Aberdeen Film Festival.
In 2016, Steve directed Day-29, a short experimental short film using daylight infrared to create a otherworldy mood. The film's sound design was completed from scratch over 3 months after the film was shot as a way to learn the importance of sound design and foley.
"The Students Of Springfield Street easily earns it's rating based on only two elements, clever writing and some damn fine acting. Mr. Johnson is a master of pretext, giving this movie a reason to "hit rewind" and see what you may have missed." - IndyRED Review of The Students of Springfield Street
"Being Directed by Steve was such a fantastic experience for me as an actor. The moments in my characters life where I had to give the true sense of her vulnerability and emotion in what she was going through, Steve was always aware of what I was going through in each scene, he helped me to engage and gave me the space needed to create what we both had visioned. Letting me prepare and get into the emotional and physical state needed was everything an actress can ask for and more. I hope I get the opportunity to work with him again soon." - Amanda Marment, Actress - The Students of Springfield Street
"I have worked with Steve on two occasions and both times has been an absolute pleasure. He is very professional and has a clear vision of what he is after and with a wealth of knowledge about the kit he uses, you can put 100% confidence in your project looking fantastic. From an actors point of view, if you ever get the chance to work with Steve.. DO IT!" - Michael McGeorge, Actor - Day-29
"Visually strong director whose passion and dedication for inspiring storytelling is a breathe of fresh air." - Robert Maitland, Director - A Fire Within
Since 2015, Steve has been an active Cinematographer throughout Scotland. He has worked with numerous directors on various short films covering different topics and styles, from short comedies to hard hitting social dramas. Steve adapts his style to match the project requirements, working with a director to create an appropriate tone and visual style that doesn't take away from the story whilst enhancing character.
Steve also owns Futurist Digital Ltd, a boutique rental business specialing in RED Digital Camera operation and worlflow. To this end, the RED camera is Steve's go-to choice for productions. Offering an unrivaled color science, the ability to work in 6K native RAW and affording the flexiability in post production, Steve understands the technical elements to help produce the creative outputs that a director requires. This has resulted in Steve teaching for RED Digital Cinema's REDucation program since 2011.
"I have had the pleasure of working with Steve Johnson on several productions and on every occasion he has been proven to be an outstanding talent working within our industry. His extensive skills and understanding of the Red Camera system play an integral part in his work resulting in high quality films ranging from High Definition to the emerging 6K format. He always rises to the challenge and will go out of his way to obtaining the end result his client wants. On set, Steve is simply a joy to work with and I know fellow colleagues feel the same way to. He keeps cool in times of stress and is quick to reassure those working round about him that and problematic situation can be dealt with. I highly recommend Steve to anyone looking to hire him for their production." - Chris Quick, Director - Autumn Never Dies
"Steve is both a gifted Director and a visionary DoP who's passion and commitment towards the projects he takes on is unrivalled. The man's ability to decipher and build upon a wide range of cinematic styles comes through his almost obsessive study of genre. He is an asset to any production." - Craig McKenna, Director - Custodian
"As a first-time filmmaker, Steve’s experience, expertise, and work ethic, was entirely invaluable in getting the very best out of the project. He was an absolute pleasure to work with, and I’m absolutely certain it won’t be the last time." - David Sexton, Director - Wee Amy
